Ever since J Lo's engagement ring, there has been a movement toward fancy colored diamonds. What is it about these magical, richly hued gemstones that capture the hearts of the buyer? And how are they created?

For quite some time, any color found in a diamond was considered undesirable. Diamonds were meant to be clean and clear - devoid of any color or even the slightest hue.

But now that fancy colored diamonds have become popular, gemologists are purposefully creating diamonds in a wide array of colors.

Naturally, diamonds can have color due to the following factors:

• Trace elements in the diamonds can produce color such as nitrogen which creates a yellow diamond.

• Color can result when radiation is present during a diamond's creation. For instance, green diamond hues are the result of radiation.

• Inclusions are undesirable in a colorless stone, but can contribute unique tones and flashes of color in a fancy color diamond.

More commonly, fancy color diamonds are treated in one form or the other. Synthetic colored diamonds are affordable and often very vibrant in hue. They are created in a laboratory but are still the "real deal." Can the Sparkle Still Shine for the Jewelry Business?

Of course, jewelry seems like the first thing to go during a tough economic phase.

Zale Corporation announced in February that it planned to close 115 stores. Fortunoff, a prominent engagement ring source for generations, filed for bankruptcy in February. Even Tiffany & Company reported that its profits in the fourth quarter dropped by more than 75 percent.

But that's the entire story. Entrepreneurs in the jewelry business and smaller businesses in general can actually thrive during trying times.

Jeffrey A. Carr, executive director of the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at New York University’s Stern School of Business, said entrepreneurs can thrive in recessions because they can bargain more on fixed costs like rent and personnel.

Consumers are more willing to try out new brands when they have less money to spend, he said.“When things are going well and you have money, customers and consumers tend to get into patterns,” he said. “There’s lots of reasons to start a business now.”

All of us can fall victim to fashion sometimes. It's easy enough to do. Some of the latest fashions looks great on a runway model - but not on you!

1. Find that metal that suits your mood. Just because its gold doesn't mean it glitters on you. These aren't ironclad rules but for the most part, brunettes, redheads and grays look better in silver jewelry, while blondes look smarter in gold. Women with black hair can go either way.

Choosing the Right Setting for your Ring

The setting for your ring is the foundation of your piece. It's an often overlooked aspect when choosing a ring but its as personal of a decision as the stone itself. Many factors come into play, such as your lifestyle and the cut of the gem itself.

There are basically three types of setting:

The Prong Setting

The prong engagement ring setting is a traditional ring setting that dates back to the early 1900's. It's a "basket" setting that holds you stone via prongs. This setting allows light to approach the stone from more angles, adding to the sparkle of your piece.

The Flush Setting

The flush setting is a more modern ring setting. A tapered hole is made within the band for the stone to reside. When done correctly, the stones are secured in an embedded manner into the ring. This is often a good choice for an active lifestyle.

The Cluster Setting

Blissful Brides Blatantly Ignorning Economy Woes

In some rather surprising news, one of the few demographics that doesn't seem to be bending due to economic pressure is (drum roll please): today's bride.

That's right. A recent study conducted by Modern Bride shows that "instead of reducing their wedding budgets, engaged couples have reprioritized and plan to spend their dollars on items that will last forever."

If you could have an interview with any jewelry designer in the world, who would it be?

Yuli Ziv:  I would love to talk to the late Daniel Swarovski. There aren't many true inventors in the field, and he was definitely one of them. It's amazing that Swarovski brand is flourishing years after his death and continues to innovate.

 

Do you have a favorite piece you like to wear? What is it, why do you love it?

Yuli Ziv:  I love simple modern looking jewelry, because it fits my personal style and most of my wardrobe. If you are the type who wants to keep up with the latest trend but realize your wallet doesn't seem to be as...fat as it used to, then this year will be fitting for you and your budget!

The 2009 "in stepper" will be donning unconventional jewelry, using varying materials and colorful gemstones. Woods, ceramics, sea shell beads, leather will all make their way onto the 2009 look. The nice part? Many of these materials are more affordable than some of their more traditional counterparts (seashell beads versus diamonds...hmmm. Which one can you afford this year?)

If you are a stickler for your gemstones, the trend this year is more colorful, unusually shaped gemstones. Think outside the box with brighter gems such as sapphire and rubies: an eye grabber any season, frankly.

How to Design your Dream Ring

A Surprise Wedding for Kristina

Here at Joseph Schubach Jewelers, we witness a fair amount of moving engagement stories. Each one is like a thumb print, distinctly individual.

Our friend and client Kristina shared with us her special story that we'd like to, in turn, share with you. We worked on her ring, a family heirloom of Kristina's that was in need of some TLC (pictured below.) That ring became part of a rather sudden wedding ceremony that, ironically, her and her husband had been planning for years:

Dear Friends:
 
Many of you know about the history of our LONG engagement due to the car accident, attempt in Vegas, busy schedules, one bizarre intervention or another, etc. So I wanted to provide you all with the latest up date.
 
IT IS OFFICIAL...... WE FINALLY GOT MARRIED!
  
It was a HUGE surprise to me as well.
 
Brent decided he would "take me to lunch" since he hasn't seen me very much over the past 2 weeks due to our work schedules (scary when we live in a the same house!) We have been trying for 3 1/2 yrs and have had 4 marriage licenses (they expire after 90 days) and countless event location rescheules all due to our crazy schedules.
 
SO, he kidnapped me (so to speak). I told him I only had 30 minutes because of all the fires with a client's risk/payment issues and the program shutdown. So he asked that I dress nice (business casual) we picked up our friend who is a minister, and then his best friend who was the best man. I was busy on the phone and working and didn't realize everyone had on suits until his best friend brought out his mega camera with tripod. At that point, I asked WHAT THE HECK is going on?? Are we doing lunch? I need to get back to the office. 

That is when, Brent told me were going to get our marriage license (again) and we were getting married TODAY, one way or another. So I was speechless. The only thing I could say was okay then, since this will take a while, we need to go back to the house so I can grab my laptop so I can work on this client's issue until we get ready to tie the knot.

After we got our license, with the minister and the best man as witnesses, we went back home so I could grab my laptop and change into a nice ivory suit then we were off to the NC Museum of Art. We married on their lawn in front of the sculptures there. The most appropriate sculpture was the "3 Rings of Life" (gigantic iron rings coming up out of the ground) Great symbolism - the rings behind us as a backdrop while we said our vows and the rings on our fingers. Kinda cool.

We are planning to have the "big shin dig" which everyone will be invited to! Hopefully it won't take us 3-4 yrs. to make it happen.

A Rose by any other Name - a Proposal Story

Joseph Schubach Jewelers is home to a million romantic stories. We get to know our customers on an intimate basis and we enjoy the many touching love stories we hear.

Here's a recent one from Charles F., whom Sherry Sheridan, a very experienced and prized staff member of ours, had the pleasure of helping:

Years ago, I took my girlfriend to have dinner at a swanky hotel restaurant for Valentine's Day. We were seated near the romantic warmth and crackling of a fireplace. While eating dinner, the waiter switched out the vase of roses at the table with another, saying: "Since these are so close to the fire, we have to rotate them out or they will dry up."

My girlfriend thought nothing of it since we were at a nice place, but I was impressed...not by the care and attention being given to the roses, but because I thought that was a very clever line the waiter made up.

Little did she know that when I had excused myself to go wash my hands, I had also made a detour to the concierge desk. I explained to the concierge that I had a rose-shaped ring holder with an engagement ring inside and that I was hoping she could arrange to have it placed on the table during dinner.

After dinner, I asked her if the roses looked unusual to her. She noticed that one did not appear to be real. I reached into the arrangement, pulled that one out and opened it up. Since this was a formal proposal, the situation called for me to get on one knee and ask her if she'd marry me while presenting this token of my affection. I noticed that her eyes had opened wide and her smile even wider, signifying to me that I had chosen well. She nodded and said yes. We removed the ring from the rose and placed it on her finger.

I suddenly became aware that the entire restaurant had been watching when it seems everyone in the place started applauding. I was totally embarrassed at this public seal of approval, turning to wave at everyone while blushing a deep red I am sure. Shortly thereafter, the head chef came out and congratulated us on our engagement.

And so the lyrics go to this clever classic. "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend", a song introduced by Carol Channing in the original production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949). It was written by Jules Styne (who wrote scores for musicals such as Funny Girl and Gypsy.)

And of course, who could forget the show-stopping Marilyn Monroe performing this number in the film version of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? Monroe's version inspired other performers for generations to come, including Madonna and Kylie Minogue.

Freshwater pearls have a bad rap. They are often considered the poor step-cousin to the ever-glamorous saltwater pearl. For many years, freshwater pearls came in awkward sizes, rough textures and garish colors. But the past ten years, the freshwater pearls have experienced a real "makeover" in the jewelry world.

Freshwater pearl farmers have revamped their cultivation and processing techniques, creating a pearl that is comparable to saltwater pearls in luster and nacre.

Bringing a Ring back to Life

One of the most important facets of Joseph Schubach Jewelers is our personalized customer service. We have customers spanning decades, returning to us because we genuinely care about what we do and how our customers feel.

Take Katherine Mowry for instance. She came to us with an engagement ring that needed some serious loving care. It was over 20 years old and needed our touch to appear as dazzling as the day her husband proposed.

We completely refurbished it, including replacing two bezel set sapphires, one on each side of her diamond, with new ones and replacing the shank (which is the bottom part of the ring) that had worn out. One of our prize team members, Sherry Sheridan, spent time with Kathryn, experimenting with different stones until the ring was just how Katherine dreamed.

The first date my current wife and I went on was to Dairy Queen on a Sunday afternoon; so it only seemed natural that when it came time to propose marriage to her I had to do it at Dairy Queen. So on a Saturday night I took her to Dairy Queen and ordered a banana split for the two of us. Then I placed a diamond solitare ring on the top of the sundae, as I got to the table where she was seated I got down on one knee and asked her to mary me. It was a night that we will never forget (and probably the folks in Dairy Queen too).

"Don't Fence Me In" has been the motto of my boss over the years.  She's now in her 80s and yearns to trot around the world but because of this and that health issue for her husband and herself, she has been grounded BUT what trips she has taken over the years.  Each of her trips was topped off with gifts of jewelry for me.  There was a beautiful, multi-colored beaded necklace from Venice, silver and turquoise earrings from Mexico City, turquoise from Tokyo, and silver from Jerusaleum.  Her care over the years in selecting pieces she knew I would love has made each piece of jewelry precious.

I have a special jewelry story.  Four years ago, my father died suddenly.  It was such a shock and tragedy.  He was only 49.  My whole family took it really bad.  But I think I took it the worst, since he died at my house and I found him.  That night after we all left the hospital, my mother came into my room and sat on my bed.  She looked so sad, I will never forget that look.  She took my hand and gave me hers and my fathers wedding rings.  I looked at her in shock.  She said he would want you to have them.  I told her I would treasure them forever!  One of my sisters was upset she did not get one.  She just got engaged, and I went to my mother and said maybe we should give "Lu" your engagement ring.  My mother said OK, if it is alright with you.  It wasn't but I loved my sister so I said OK.  To make a long story short.  A year later my sisters marriage didn't work out.  I noticed she didn't wear the ring anymore, so I asked her where it was?  She said "away".  Well come to find out she pawned it!  How could she of did this!  I was so upset.  I prayed to my father to bring the ring back to me where it belonged!  With the other rings.  Three months later, my mother called me.  She said "guess what?"  I said what?  She said I got the ring back!!!.  I was shock and asked her how?  The ring she had was specially made and one of a kind.  She said a friend of hers was shopping and spotted it in a pawn shop and recognized it as my mothers and bought it!  To this day I still think my father sent her friend into that shop that day!  Thanks DAD!!
